this is a continuation of the discussion in the "Chapuis or Merkel?" thread.

a recap, my Sabatti 450/400 NE 3" was having trouble so I decided to send it back. while searching for a new rifle in 450/400 NE 3" I stumbled across this gem in a caliber ive been interested in. after a number of emails and a phone call, me and the seller agreed on a price.

I do not have the rifle yet and probably wont get it for 3-4 weeks due to both me and the seller having busy schedules. but im sure it will...

So after an interesting conversation with Mark Sullivan on doubles and makes the other day:

"my grandmother shoots a .500NE and a .470NE is great for squirrels or rabbits"... "I don't allow Blaser or Krieghoff in my camp" (due to the way the safety mechanism works).

I am stuck on the below: Hyem or Verney Carron in a .577NE
.577 NE more practical in performance/weight/handling than 600NE. Given the option I would rather shoot a 700NE than a 600 due to better powder burn/speed from 50MBG...

I looked at one today....boy what a beauty, clearly a best gun with lovely scroll all over and a faboulus piece of walnut.
Extra lock on safety lever, leather covered recoil pad etc....a beauty..

I know the firm was bought by Purdey in 1949...but who can fill me in on these rifles..?

What calibres where they made in..? Are they sought after..?

My favorite, of everything (except perhaps caliber). Jones underlever, Beesley self-opening action, Purdey rose and scroll, luscious wood, 1902 vintage, etc. For the money, it's an incredible rifle (at any price it's an incredible rifle, but at $38,500, in my mind, it is an absolute steal).

How do Hollis and Manton rank in the world of double rifles?
Imagine them in .470, obviously each condition could be different but let's say they similar. Over and above the famous names of H&H with Purdey, I see lots of others which people consider good collector pieces. So thought I would see where these two fit in.

Sabatti double rifle hunt

View attachment 43787 Finally had a chance to try my sabatti out on some large game. Performed flawlessly. 60 yard running shot, the bullet hit the mark right where I aimed. The weight of a the sabatti was nice to carry around weighs less than my wife's 470 capstick. Anybody else out there hunted with sabatti double rifles or a 470 capstick? Would like to see pictures.

Acquired a 500 Nitro for Black - now what?

i got a vintage Brit box lock in 500 nitro for black. It's regulation load appears to be a 440gr .510" bullet and 55gr of cordite. In my search it seems that woodleigh makes a jacketed bullet and that is the entire suite of options for this caliber?

-how can I affordably regulate this gun?

-do they make solids?

-is this gun with a soft point ethical for Cape buffalo?

-it has 5 folding leafs from 100-500 yards. Do I infer that it should regulate to shoot parallel and NOT cross at 50?

How...

Double rifle for the Big Five in .470 Nitro Express

Good afternoon everyone
I would like some advice if possible.
I'm hoping too hunt the big five in a few years if still possible.
I put my eyes on a double rifle in .470 Nitro Express complete handmade by a Belgium gun maker.
Is this a good caliber too go for the big five or too heavy for leopard and lion?
The reason that is ask it is because if I order now I have my gun end 2017.
I takes about 640 hours too make the gun.
Thanks in advance
Stefan

Double Rifle Load Regulation

Gents:
I'm new here and I'll try to post with a photo to experiment a bit.
Anyway, it's interesting to see a double rifle change its target grouping as the powder charge changes. Most vintage double can be made to shoot well by playing with the load--either the powder type, powder charge, bullet weight, bullet style--or all four.

A mate bought a .577-500 double from me a short while ago and came to my home to shoot it for the first time. He did the shooting and I recommended the load. We...

I'm visiting here to talk about the 12ga From Hell and
other developements it has led to.Nice site you folks have.
I'm with a group of experimenters passing on the years of
info and pictures to all gun nuts around the net, about
12ga From Hell and other big bores. We have posted some
round the net about our many ideas we have implemented for
12ga,10ga,8ga,4ga,28ga,20ga,16ga, and my 585HE/700HE wildcats.

The idea for the 12ga FH, and the first gun built for it,

Older Searcy on BSS frame

Good evening gents,

I've read a lot of articles on Searcy's and most have been positive. But most refer to the newer ones that are based off his action. I'm seeing a few of the original Searcy's that were based off BSS frames for good prices. But I don't hear many reviews on them. The main thing I've heard is they were "clubby" but that doesn't bother me too much. Does anyone have experience with the older Searcy's? No idea how many rounds the one in looking at has through it but it looks...
